What is Know about Eritrea’s Olympic Journey

Eritrea’s Olympic journey began after independence and gained official momentum when the country became a member of the International Olympic Committee in 1998. Since its first official participation at the Sydney 2000 Olympics, Eritrea has steadily expanded its presence in athletics, cycling, swimming, youth competitions, and the Winter Olympics through diaspora athletes. Notable achievements include Zersenay Tadese’s bronze medal at Athens 2004, youth Olympic medals, strong marathon and steeplechase performances, and increased participation by women athletes. Today, Eritrea continues to build a sustainable and growing presence in international sport. This progress reflects Eritrea’s growing commitment to developing its athletes, strengthening its national sports federations, and expanding its role in the global Olympic movement.
